Each year, national and international NGOs receive huge amounts of funding to implement humanitarian and development projects around the world.
Part of these funds are used to develop multimedia products including films and animation used as a way of documenting lessons learned and sharing, increasing visibility as well as for campaigns and evidence-driven advocacy interventions.
Once developed, most of these materials end up in the organizations’ archives or with limited distribution.
We believe this is a waste of resources, both finances and skills, invested in developing such materials. There is a need to ensure such content is shared with a larger community, and that’s why The NGO International Film Festival comes in as a way of bridging the gap and to create an opportunity for sharing knowledge, information and discussions through films. The first edition of the festival, the first of its kind, took place on 20th – 22nd October 2021. The 2022 festival is scheduled to take place on 19th - 21st October 2022 in a hybrid event virtually and physically.
When we began this journey, three years ago, we understood that films (both documentaries & dramas) have a critical role to play in the international development space. The challenge is however, most of these films are never seen by a wider audience. Knowledge curation and sharing is therefore, the integral part of this festival. The Festival aims to build a culture of knowledge sharing amongst NGOs and their key stakeholders through films.
The first edition of the NGO International Film Festival couldn't have been launched at a better time than the year 2021, when the United Nations adopted the theme ‘International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development’. This re-affirmed the contributions of the global creative community in the promotion of economic growth, foster innovation and provide opportunities, benefits and empowerment for all and respect for all human rights. The UN theme for 2022 is "International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022)." This is an opportunity for introducing films that accelerate global actions and contributions in support of the works of Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) who are leading this year's UN mandate.
We therefore welcome you to participate and support this festival by becoming a partner, submit a film(s) and sponsor this unique platform.
